WORMPIT

Introduction: WORMPIT

WORMPIT is a mnemonic in Lean management used to identify and eliminate waste. By categorising non-value-adding activities, it helps teams focus on continuous improvement, streamline workflows, and deliver more value to customers.

Background

The concept of waste elimination originates from the Toyota Production System (TPS), where seven types of waste (muda) were defined. WORMPIT expands on this idea by providing a practical memory aid for managers and employees, making it easier to spot inefficiencies in daily operations. Some versions also include “Information” and “Talent” as additional categories.

Key Elements/Features

WORMPIT stands for:

  • Waiting – idle time with no value creation.
  • Overproduction – making more or earlier than needed.
  • Rework – correcting errors or defects.
  • Motion – unnecessary human or equipment movement.
  • Processing (Overprocessing) – doing more than the customer requires.
  • Inventory – storing excess materials or products.
  • Transport – unnecessary movement of goods.

Additional categories sometimes included are Information (inefficient communication) and Talent (not using people’s skills).

Applications/Examples

WORMPIT is widely applied across industries. For example:

  • In manufacturing, excess inventory and rework drive up costs.
  • In healthcare, waiting times delay patient care.
  • In services, redundant approvals or emails waste time.

Teams use WORMPIT in workshops, Kaizen events, and daily stand-ups to identify and prioritise waste elimination.

Relevance/Impact

By applying WORMPIT, organisations can cut costs, reduce lead times, and boost efficiency. It also raises employee awareness of Lean principles, driving engagement and ownership. Eliminating waste through WORMPIT ultimately improves customer satisfaction and strengthens competitiveness.
