Introduction: VSM

Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a Lean tool used to visualise and analyse the steps within a process. It identifies which activities add value for the customer and which create waste, providing a clear overview for improving process flow and efficiency.

Background

Developed within the Toyota Production System, VSM became one of the most widely used Lean techniques. It maps every step of a process—from raw materials to customer delivery—so teams can see where delays, bottlenecks, or unnecessary actions occur. By comparing the current process to an improved future state, organisations can design a more efficient, value-driven workflow.

• Current State Map: Displays the process as it currently operates, showing material and information flows, times, and inventories.
• Future State Map: Illustrates the desired process after improvements, with reduced waste and smoother flow.
• Information Flow: Tracks how communication and decisions move through the system, connecting people, departments, and systems.
• Standard Symbols: VSM uses consistent icons to represent processes, materials, and data, ensuring clear and uniform understanding.
