Process Of Ongoing Improvement (POOGI)

Introduction: POOGI

POOGI, short for Process Of Ongoing Improvement, is a key concept within the Theory of Constraints (TOC), introduced by Eliyahu M. Goldratt. It emphasises that improvement is not a one-time initiative but a continuous cycle of identifying and resolving constraints to achieve better performance.

Background

Goldratt developed POOGI alongside the Theory of Constraints to provide organisations with a mindset and method for continuous progress. The idea reinforces that businesses should never settle for the status quo but instead keep pursuing higher levels of throughput, profitability, and customer value.

Key Elements/Features

  • Continuous Cycle: Improvement is never finished; once one constraint is resolved, another becomes the focus.
  • Alignment: Ensures all changes support the organisation’s overall goal.
  • System-Wide View: Prevents local optimisation by focusing on total system performance.

The Five Focusing Steps (TOC)

  1. Identify the Constraint – Locate the bottleneck limiting performance.
  2. Exploit the Constraint – Maximise use of the constraint without major investment.
  3. Subordinate Everything Else – Align all other processes to support the constraint.
  4. Elevate the Constraint – Add capacity or resources if needed.
  5. Repeat – Once the constraint shifts, return to step 1 for ongoing improvement.

Applications/Examples

  • Manufacturing: Increasing throughput by addressing production bottlenecks.
  • Project Management: Shortening timelines by focusing on critical resources.
  • Service Processes: Streamlining customer service workflows to remove delays.
  • Lean Six Sigma: Integrating TOC thinking with other continuous improvement methods.

Relevance/Impact

POOGI provides a disciplined approach to continuous improvement, keeping organisations focused on the most critical leverage points. It builds a culture of ongoing learning, prevents complacency, and ensures sustained improvements in performance and customer satisfaction.
