Background

Originating in the Toyota Production System (TPS), the word Kanban means “signboard” or “visual signal” in Japanese. Initially, physical cards were attached to containers or bins to signal when more materials were needed. This simple yet powerful tool allowed Toyota to synchronise production with demand and minimise excess inventory. Today, Kanban systems are applied not only in manufacturing and logistics but also in services and knowledge work, often through digital Kanban boards.
