Jidoka is a Lean manufacturing principle that ensures quality by stopping production when problems occur. It is often described as “automation with a human touch” because it combines machine efficiency with human judgement.
The concept was pioneered by Toyota and forms one of the two pillars of the Toyota Production System, alongside Just-in-Time (JIT). Jidoka was first introduced in the early 20th century by Sakichi Toyoda, who invented a loom that automatically stopped when a thread broke. This prevented defects from continuing down the line and laid the foundation for modern quality assurance in Lean.
For example, in a Toyota factory, if a worker finds a faulty part, they activate Jidoka by stopping the line. The issue is corrected immediately, ensuring only quality products move forward.
