First Time Yield (FTY)

Introduction: FTY

First Time Yield (FTY) is a core metric in quality management and process control. It measures the percentage of units that pass through an entire process correctly on the first attempt, without requiring rework, repair, or corrections. FTY provides a clear indication of how effectively a process delivers defect-free results.

Background

FTY is closely related to First Pass Yield (FPY), but while FPY measures performance at each process step, FTY reflects the success rate of the complete process from start to finish. This makes it particularly valuable for assessing overall process health and efficiency.

Key Elements/Features

  • First time: The initial journey of a product or service through the full process.
  • Yield: The proportion of items meeting quality standards without errors or rework.

Formula:

\(
FTY(\%) = \left( \dfrac{\text{Total Units without rework}}{\text{Total Units processed}} \right) \times 100
\)

Applications/Examples

FTY is applied across sectors:

  • Manufacturing: Assessing production line efficiency and assembly accuracy.
  • Service industries: Measuring error-free outcomes in call centres, repair services, or administrative processes.
  • Healthcare: Evaluating patient procedures completed correctly without repeat interventions.

For example, if 850 out of 1,000 processed units are produced correctly on the first attempt, the FTY is 85%.

Relevance/Impact

High FTY reflects an efficient process that:

  • Improves efficiency: Less time is wasted on rework or corrections.
  • Reduces costs: Saves materials, labour, and operating expenses.
  • Boosts customer satisfaction: Fewer defects mean fewer complaints and higher trust.
  • Supports quality control: Highlights weak points in the process that may generate errors.

Improving FTY

  • Process improvement: Analysing low-yield areas to identify root causes of defects.
  • Employee training: Equipping staff with the skills and knowledge to perform tasks correctly.
  • Technology upgrades: Using automation or precision tools to increase reliability.
