Capability Index (Cp)

Introduction: Cp

The Capability Index, or Cp, is a statistical measure used in quality management to evaluate the potential performance of a process. It shows how well a process can produce results within specified limits by comparing its natural variation to the allowable tolerance range. Cp is a key tool in process capability analysis and continuous improvement.

Background

The concept of process capability was developed to provide a quantitative way of assessing whether a process can reliably meet customer requirements. Cp focuses on the short-term spread of process variation relative to specification limits, assuming that the process is stable and normally distributed.

Key Elements / Features

Formula:

\(
C_p = \dfrac{USL – LSL}{6 \cdot \sigma}
\)

where USL is the Upper Specification Limit, LSL is the Lower Specification Limit, and σ is the standard deviation of the process.

  • Interpretation:
    • Cp = 1.0 The process fits exactly within specification limits.
    • Cp > 1.0 The process is more capable, with less variability.
    • Cp < 1.0 The process variation exceeds specification limits.

Focus on Spread: Cp evaluates process spread but does not consider how centred the process is within the limits.

Applications / Examples

  • Manufacturing: Checking if machining tolerances fall within acceptable product specifications.
  • Quality Control: Assessing whether processes are capable before mass production.
  • Process Improvement: Identifying variability issues and supporting Six Sigma projects.

Relevance / Impact

Understanding Cp helps organisations to:

  • Ensure processes consistently meet quality requirements.
  • Reduce waste and costs linked to defects and rework.
  • Improve efficiency and customer satisfaction.
