Introduction: Build in Quality
Build in Quality, also known as Jidoka or “Stop the Line,” is a core principle of Lean and Lean Six Sigma. It emphasises embedding quality into every step of the process rather than relying solely on end-of-line inspections. By ensuring issues are detected and resolved immediately, organisations can improve efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance customer satisfaction.
Background
The concept originates from the Toyota Production System (TPS), where Jidoka (自働化) means “automation with a human touch.” First introduced in textile manufacturing, it empowered machines and people alike to stop production when defects occurred. This principle later became a cornerstone of Lean manufacturing and continuous improvement practices worldwide.

- Jidoka – Autonomy of Machines: Machines are designed to stop automatically when abnormalities are detected.
- Empowerment of Employees: Workers are authorised to halt production if quality problems arise.
- Stop the Line: Production is paused to address defects at the source, preventing defective products from progressing.
- Quality at the Source: Each step in the process is responsible for producing defect-free outputs.
