Breakthrough Improvement, known in Japanese as Kaikaku, is a Lean management concept focused on making radical, transformative changes to processes. Unlike gradual improvements, Kaikaku introduces large-scale innovations that result in immediate, significant performance gains in efficiency, quality, or customer value.
The term Kaikaku emerged in Japan alongside Lean Manufacturing practices at Toyota. While Kaizen became widely known as “continuous small improvements,” Kaikaku addressed the need for organisations to periodically make bold changes when incremental steps were insufficient. Often linked with shifts in technology, market demands, or strategic direction, Kaikaku is seen as a way to rapidly reposition an organisation for future competitiveness.
