Acceptable Quality Level (AQL) is a quality management measure that defines the maximum number of defective items considered acceptable in a production batch. It provides companies with a practical balance between achieving high quality and maintaining operational efficiency.
The concept of AQL was first developed by the U.S. military during the Second World War to standardise inspection processes. It has since become a global standard in industries such as manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and consumer goods, helping organisations ensure consistency while controlling inspection costs.
For example, a company producing 10,000 units of a product may decide that a maximum of 1% defects is acceptable. Inspectors then sample a smaller number of items. If defects are below the limit, the full batch is released.

While Lean and Six Sigma aim for “Zero Defects,” AQL provides a practical short-term target, ensuring customer satisfaction without unnecessary waste.
