What is a Value Stream Map (VSM)?

A Value Stream Map (VSM) is a widely used tool within the Lean methodology that helps identify waste in processes and visualize and analyze the flow of materials and information required to deliver a product or service from start to finish. In a VSM, the flow of materials and information is quantified with data so that analyses can be performed for each process step.

The Value Stream Map is also referred to as value stream analysis. The essence of the concept of “value” is that the value of a product or service is determined by the customer.

How does a Value Stream Map (VSM) work?

The process of creating a VSM begins with identifying the key processes and activities involved in creating and delivering value to the customer. These processes and activities are visualized in a process description that shows the flow of materials and information within the process.

There are often three versions of a Value Stream Map:

1. Current State Value Stream Map: The current state of the process (value stream).
2. Future State Value Stream Map: The improved version of the process.
3. Ideal State Value Stream Map: The ideal situation without waste and with only value-adding activities.

In addition, the Value Stream Map is often used in production processes. For service processes, a Makigami diagram is more suitable.
