RACI

Introduction: RACI Model

The RACI model is a structured tool for defining and communicating roles within projects and business processes. It helps reduce confusion about task assignments by clarifying who is responsible, who has final accountability, and who should be consulted or informed. This makes collaboration more effective and decision-making more transparent.

Background

Projects often fail or slow down due to unclear responsibilities and overlapping roles. To address this, the RACI model was developed as a simple matrix that maps tasks against team members. It is widely used in project management, business process design, and organisational change initiatives to create accountability and streamline communication.

Key Elements/Features

  • Responsible: Individuals who perform the work and ensure the task is completed.
  • Accountable: The person with ultimate ownership of the task. Only one person should be accountable to avoid confusion.
  • Consulted: People whose expertise or input is required. Communication is two-way.
  • Informed: Stakeholders who need updates but are not directly involved. Communication is one-way.

Applications/Examples

The RACI model is applied in diverse industries to support project governance. In IT system rollouts, for instance, developers may be Responsible, the project manager Accountable, subject-matter experts Consulted, and executives Informed. In healthcare, RACI matrices clarify who performs clinical tasks, who signs off, and who requires updates.

Relevance/Impact

By creating role clarity, the RACI model prevents duplication of effort and ensures tasks are not overlooked. It enhances efficiency, speeds up decision-making, and improves teamwork. As a result, projects are more likely to be delivered on time and with higher stakeholder satisfaction.
