Process Layout

Introduction: Process Layout in Lean Management

A Process Layout is an organisational approach that groups similar activities or resources into clusters. By positioning related tasks together, this layout creates structured “mini-ecosystems” where employees with similar functions can work closely. In Lean management, this arrangement can improve efficiency, reduce waste, and strengthen workflow.

Background

Process Layouts are commonly used in environments where diverse products or services are produced, and tasks vary widely. Unlike product or line layouts, which follow a fixed sequence, process layouts allow flexibility by grouping resources based on function. This approach has long been applied in healthcare, service industries, and manufacturing with high product variety.

Key Elements/Features

  • Specialisation: Groups employees with similar skills and processes.
  • Workflow Efficiency: Reduces the time and effort required to transfer information or materials.
  • Waste Reduction: Minimises unnecessary movement, transport, and waiting times.
  • Flexibility: Can handle diverse tasks and customised products more easily than line layouts.

Applications/Examples

  • Healthcare: Grouping diagnostic services (e.g., X-ray, lab testing) into one area.
  • Manufacturing: Machine shops organised by function, such as cutting, drilling, or finishing.
  • Services: Administrative offices grouping similar support functions like HR or finance.

Relevance/Impact

A well-designed Process Layout can enhance expertise, strengthen communication within departments, and reduce waste. However, one challenge is the risk of silo formation, where departments focus inward and fail to collaborate effectively across functions. To mitigate this, organisations must promote cross-functional communication and balance local efficiency with overall system performance.
