GROW Model

Introduction: GROW Model

The GROW Model is a practical coaching and problem-solving framework that offers a structured way to set goals and achieve results. Developed in the UK during the 1980s, it has become one of the most widely used models in leadership, coaching, Lean, and organisational development. The acronym stands for Goal, Reality, Options, Will (or Way Forward).

Background

Originally popularised in executive coaching, the GROW Model has since been adopted across industries for personal development, performance management, and continuous improvement. Its strength lies in its simplicity and focus on action, making it accessible for both individuals and teams.

Key Elements/Features

  1. Goal: Define what you want to achieve. Goals should be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound).
  2. Reality: Assess the current situation honestly, considering challenges, barriers, and available resources.
  3. Options: Explore possible solutions and alternatives. Brainstorm freely before evaluating feasibility and impact.
  4. Will / Way Forward: Decide on specific actions, deadlines, and accountability measures to ensure progress.

Applications/Examples

  • Executive Coaching: Supporting leaders in clarifying objectives and overcoming barriers.
  • Team Development: Aligning goals and actions across teams to improve collaboration.
  • Continuous Improvement: Providing structure for Lean problem-solving discussions.
  • Performance Management: Guiding employees in setting and tracking personal development goals.

Example: In a coaching session with a project leader:

  • Goal: Reduce project delays by 20%.
  • Reality: Delays caused by unclear task assignments.
  • Options: Improve communication, introduce a task board, redefine roles.
  • Will: Pilot a visual task board within two weeks and review results after one month.

Relevance/Impact

The GROW Model helps individuals and organisations move from abstract goals to concrete action. It fosters accountability, self-reflection, and practical problem-solving, supporting long-term performance improvement.
