DMADV

Introduction: DMADV Methodology

DMADV: Define, Measure, Analyse, Design, Verify—is a Lean Six Sigma methodology used to design or redesign products, services, or processes. It is applied when existing systems no longer meet requirements or when new solutions are required to achieve higher quality and customer satisfaction.

Background

Unlike the DMAIC cycle, which focuses on improving existing processes, DMADV is specifically designed for innovation and new development. It provides a structured, data-driven framework that helps organisations minimise risk and ensure designs are aligned with customer needs.

Key Elements/Features

The five phases of DMADV are:

  1. Define: Establish project goals, scope, and customer requirements.
  2. Measure: Collect data and set performance baselines or benchmarks.
  3. Analyse: Identify problems, variability, and opportunities through in-depth data analysis.
  4. Design: Develop and model new processes, products, or services.
  5. Verify: Validate designs through testing, feedback, and refinement to ensure objectives are met.

Applications/Examples

DMADV is used across industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and service sectors. Examples include designing new production lines, creating customer service systems, or developing innovative healthcare delivery models. It is especially valuable where reliability, quality, and efficiency are critical.

Relevance/Impact

By combining research, analysis, and design, DMADV ensures that new products and processes are robust and customer-focused. It reduces risks of failure, improves time-to-market, and supports long-term organisational growth. The structured approach also helps teams collaborate effectively and make informed decisions.
