Defects per Unit (DPU)

Introduction: DPU

Defects per Unit (DPU) is a key quality metric in Lean Six Sigma and quality management. It measures the average number of defects found in a single unit of production or service. By quantifying process performance in this way, DPU helps identify weaknesses, reduce waste, and improve overall quality.

Background

DPU is widely used alongside other Six Sigma metrics such as Defects per Opportunity (DPO) and Defects per Million Opportunities (DPMO). While DPU reflects the average number of defects per unit, DPO accounts for the total opportunities for defects within each unit, and DPMO scales this to a rate per million. Together, these measures provide a comprehensive view of process capability and quality performance.

Key Elements / Features

  • Definition: The average number of defects per unit (e.g., per product, per batch, per transaction).

Formula (DPU):

DPU = \dfrac{\text{Total Defects}}{\text{Total Units}}

Formula (DPO):

DPO = \dfrac{\text{Total Defects}}{\text{Total Units} \times \text{Opportunities per Unit}}

Formula (DPMO):

DPMO = DPO \times 1{,}000{,}000

  • Focus: Highlights the extent to which products or services deviate from requirements and where process improvements are needed.

Applications / Examples

  • Manufacturing: Measuring assembly defects per car produced.
  • Electronics: Tracking soldering defects per circuit board.
  • Healthcare: Recording documentation errors per patient record.
  • Services: Counting defects per financial transaction or customer order.

Relevance / Impact

DPU and its related metrics are essential for:

  • Quality Improvement: Lowering DPU increases Sigma levels and strengthens customer satisfaction.
  • Cost Reduction: Fewer defects reduce waste, rework, and warranty claims.
  • Process Optimisation: Analysing DPU trends highlights bottlenecks and guides targeted improvements.

By monitoring DPU alongside DPO and DPMO, organisations can quantify quality performance, benchmark processes, and drive continuous improvement.
