Colour Thinking

Introduction: Colour Thinking (Change Model by De Caluwé and Vermaak)

Colour Thinking is a change management model developed by Leon de Caluwé and Hans Vermaak. It identifies five “colours” that represent different mindsets and strategies for driving organisational change. By understanding and applying these perspectives, managers and consultants can design change initiatives that are more effective, collaborative, and sustainable.

Background

Introduced in the Netherlands in the late 20th century, the Colour Thinking model provides a practical framework for analysing and guiding change. Rather than prescribing a single method, it highlights that people approach change differently. Recognising these perspectives allows organisations to adapt strategies to context and stakeholder needs.

Key Elements / Features

  • White-Print Thinking (Organic and Natural): Change emerges organically through culture, dialogue, and interaction.
  • Green-Print Thinking (Learning and Development): Focuses on growth, skills, and learning as drivers of change.
  • Red-Print Thinking (Motivation and Engagement): Builds change through trust, bonding, and motivation of employees.
  • Blue-Print Thinking (Planning and Structuring): Treats change as a project with clear goals, planning, and control.
  • Yellow-Print Thinking (Politics and Power): Recognises power, negotiation, and stakeholder interests in shaping outcomes.

Applications / Examples

  • Change Programmes: Selecting a dominant colour approach or combining multiple colours to fit context.
  • Team Collaboration: Understanding individual preferences for approaching change.
  • Consultancy: Providing frameworks for diagnosing organisational challenges.
  • Leadership Development: Helping managers adapt their change style to different situations.

Relevance / Impact

The Colour Thinking model enables organisations to:

  • Tailor change strategies to specific contexts.
  • Foster collaboration by recognising different perspectives.
  • Combine approaches for more sustainable and integrated results.
  • Enhance the effectiveness of consultants and change agents.
