AID Model

Introduction: AID Model

The AID Model is a communication and change management framework used in leadership, Lean, and organisational development. The acronym stands for Attention, Interest, Desire and describes the stages people move through when engaging with new information or change initiatives. It is a simplified workplace version of the marketing-based AIDA model.

Background

Originally inspired by advertising and marketing communication, the AID Model has been adapted for organisational use. Leaders and Lean practitioners use it to guide employees through awareness, engagement, and motivation, ensuring that changes are understood and embraced.

Key Elements / Features

  1. Attention – Capture people’s awareness by highlighting a problem, opportunity, or improvement. Example: sharing performance data that shows inefficiency.
  2. Interest – Stimulate curiosity by showing why the change matters to them. Example: explaining how improvements will reduce stress or workload.
  3. Desire – Build commitment and motivation to act. Example: involving employees in designing solutions so they feel ownership.

Together, these stages form a practical structure for communicating and embedding change.

Applications / Examples

The AID Model can be used in:

  • Lean projects – Communicating why improvements matter.
  • Change management – Reducing resistance and building support.
  • Leadership communication – Structuring team messages.
  • Training sessions – Creating engagement and interest in learning.

For example, in a Lean Six Sigma project:

  • Attention – Present data on long customer waiting times.
  • Interest – Show how improvements will make employees’ daily work easier.
  • Desire – Engage the team in co-creating solutions to increase buy-in.

Relevance / Impact

The AID Model is simple, memorable, and effective. It helps leaders avoid one-way communication and ensures that employees not only hear about changes but also care about and support them.
