7MP Tools

Introduction: 7 Management and Planning Tools (7MP Tools)

The Seven Management and Planning Tools (7MP Tools) are methods designed to support decision-making, problem-solving, and project planning. They provide structure when dealing with complex issues, helping teams move from ideas to clear actions.

Background

Developed in Japan in the 1970s, the 7MP Tools were created as a complement to the Seven Quality Control Tools. While QC tools focus on data and process control, the 7MP Tools support planning, organisation, and teamwork. They are widely used in Lean, Six Sigma, and quality management.

Key Elements / Features

The seven tools are:

  1. Affinity Diagram – Organises large amounts of ideas into themes.
  2. Interrelationship Diagram – Shows cause-and-effect links between issues.
  3. Tree Diagram – Breaks goals into smaller, detailed actions.
  4. Matrix Diagram – Displays relationships between two or more sets of factors.
  5. Prioritisation Matrix – Ranks options against weighted criteria.
  6. Process Decision Program Chart (PDPC) – Identifies risks and countermeasures in plans.
  7. Activity Network Diagram (AND) – Maps task sequences and dependencies to plan timelines.

Applications / Examples

The 7MP Tools are used in:

  • Strategic planning – Breaking down broad visions into structured steps.
  • Problem-solving workshops – From brainstorming to prioritising solutions.
  • Project management – Identifying risks, dependencies, and action plans.
  • Continuous improvement – Supporting Lean and Six Sigma initiatives.

For example, a Lean team may use an Affinity Diagram to organise improvement ideas, an Interrelationship Diagram to find key drivers, and a Prioritisation Matrix to select the best solutions.

Relevance / Impact

The 7MP Tools provide structure for tackling complex problems and ensure that teams move logically from data to action. They build collaboration, support clear decision-making, and create confidence in chosen solutions.
