5S is a method used to improve and maintain efficiency and productivity in the workplace. The 5S method can be applied in all types of environments and is not limited to production and industrial settings; service processes can also benefit from 5S.

The five S’s stand for:

1. Sort – Sort (Seiri)
2. Straighten – Straighten (Seiton)
3. Shine – Shine (Seiso)
4. Standardize – Standardize (Seiketsu)
5. Sustain – Sustain (Shitsuke) 

The goal of 5S is to reduce waste, increase efficiency, and create a safer, standardized work environment. In this way, workplace safety also improves naturally. This leads to faster processes with less variability and fewer errors, resulting in less waste. In our free 5S training, you will learn everything about this.

Some organizations add a number of extra S’s to the 5S method, such as Safety, Security, and Satisfaction.

• Safety: all standard work methods should primarily result in a safe work description.
• Security: security includes all measures taken to protect a target from harmful influences.
• Satisfaction: create a sense of involvement among people by, for example, celebrating successes together and giving compliments about 5S.
